Customised segment motors

Segment motors are specialised electric motors that can be used particularly flexibly thanks to their modular design. We have made a name for ourselves as specialists in customised drive technology tailored precisely to customer requirements. We develop and produce customised segment motors that meet the highest requirements.

We want to emphasise the arrangement of the coil systems in a segment motor. The coils are installed in groups in the individual segments. Each individual segment therefore has its own port and is connected to the other segments. The individual segments are referred to as secondary parts and the motor made up of all segments is referred to as the primary part.

The force development of the individual segments is the equal and is achieved via the magnet height. The entire motor (the primary part) is controlled uniformly. Fischer segment motors are known for their low-vibration and quiet running. Modern segment motors are often equipped with integrated sensors and controls, which makes them particularly efficient and precise to control.

Segment motors develop enormous forces, but at the same time ensure smooth, jerk-free motion sequences.

They are a reliable solution for major challenges and are usually more energy-efficient, quieter and less prone to wear than conventional drive systems.

Design and technology of segment motors
As the name suggests, these motors do not consist of continuous rings, but of several segments. Due to this modular design, segment motors are easy to process and can be used very flexibly.

In terms of possible diameters this design offers enormous advantages. Diameters of several metres are not uncommon, as they also consist of several segments. Such dimensions are almost impossible to realise as one-piece ring motors. Segment motors can be integrated piece by piece into the desired drive system on the customer’s part.

To produce large segment motors, we combine our electric motors with Franke’s innovative rolling bearing technology. In combination with the expertise of Franke GmbH, segmented direct drives can be produced that set standards in terms of performance, efficiency and service life.

This speaks in favour of segment motors from Fischer:

Customised development and production

Efficient production of engine parts

Possible redundant structure in segment design

Economical production of motors with extremely large diameters

Rotation can take place through individual segments

Low service costs

Motor operation is possible even if a segment is removed

No system failure in the event of partial revision with removal of a segment

Segment motors can be supplied as installation kits or finished motors

Areas of application for Fischer segment motors

Large segment motors are used wherever enormous forces are required – reliably, precisely and with low maintenance. Their special design makes them particularly suitable for heavy-duty industrial applications where conventional drive solutions reach their limits.

Typical areas of application are:

  • Rotating platforms and positioning systems
For the precise movement of large masses, such as in antenna systems, observatories or large industrial turntables
  • Raw material industry
In rotary kilns, ball mills and tube mills, segment motors ensure a powerful and even drive.
  • Power generation
Segment motors are ideally suited as direct drives for wind turbines.
